The H2 Powercell project on Koh Jik, Thailand, involves expanding the island’s renewable energy system by integrating an electrolyser, fuel cell, and hydrogen storage. The goal is to demonstrate how combining solar power, battery storage, and hydrogen technology can achieve a fully CO2-free, reliable energy supply.

This project serves as a model for sustainable energy solutions on islands in Southeast Asia and includes developing an open-source tool to help other islands plan similar systems. The initiative also involves socio-economic studies to assess the broader market potential for green hydrogen energy in the region.

How we Completed

The H2 Powercell project on Koh Jik was successfully completed by installing an electrolyser, fuel cell, and hydrogen storage system integrated with the island’s existing solar and battery setup. This system enables a fully renewable, CO2-free energy supply, demonstrating how hydrogen and battery storage can provide reliable and sustainable power for island communities. The project also included scientific analysis and development of an open-source planning tool to support similar renewable energy solutions across Southeast Asia.

The Mission

The mission of the H2 Powercell project on Koh Jik was to demonstrate a fully renewable, CO2-free energy supply by integrating green hydrogen technology with solar and battery storage. The aim was to provide a sustainable, reliable power solution for island communities, proving that economic viability and environmental sustainability can coexist. Additionally, the project sought to create an open-source planning tool and conduct socio-economic studies to enable wider adoption of green hydrogen energy in island regions across Southeast Asia.

Final Results

The final results of the H2 Powercell project on Koh Jik showed that the integration of hydrogen fuel cell technology with solar power and battery storage successfully provided a 100% renewable, reliable, and CO2-free energy supply for the island.

The system proved the technical feasibility and economic viability of hydrogen-based energy solutions in remote island settings. Additionally, the project produced an open-source planning tool and published socio-economic analyses, paving the way for replication and scaling of similar clean energy projects in Southeast Asia, Oceania and beyond.
