Load Management Test at Motu Resort

The Motu Beachfront Villas Resort in Rarotonga has successfully completed a groundbreaking load management test as part of preparations to design an off-grid energy solution powered by green hydrogen. This initiative, supported by the German Chamber of Commerce and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUV), marks a significant step toward sustainable energy independence for the Pacific Islands.

Test Overview
ICTnexus, a Cook Islands-based technology company specializing in smart island solutions, conducted the test using advanced energy monitoring technologies. A Janitza UMG103 power meter connected via LoRaWAN to the ICTnexus Smart Island LoRa Network was deployed to collect detailed energy consumption data. The data was analysed using Janitza’s GridVis Energy Management Software, ensuring compliance with AS/NZS 3000 standards for electrical installations.

The test is part of a broader effort to integrate renewable energy systems into local infrastructure. The collected data will inform the optimal sizing of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery storage, and hydrogen electrolysis units for these facilities. This tailored approach aims to maximize efficiency and sustainability while reducing reliance on costly imported fossil fuels.

Green hydrogen technology offers unique advantages for island nations like the Cook Islands. It provides long-term energy storage and decentralised power generation capabilities, addressing challenges such as fluctuating renewable energy availability and high electricity costs.
